1And YHWH answered Job, and said:
2"Shall a contender with Shaddai correct him? He that reproves God, let him answer it."
3And Job answered YHWH, and said:
4"Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? My hand I lay upon my mouth.
5Once I have spoken, but I will not answer; and twice, but I will not add more."
6And YHWH answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:
7"Gird up now your loins like a man; I will ask you, and make me know.
8Will you even annul my judgment (mishpat)? Will you condemn me, that you may be justified?
9And have you an arm like God? And can you thunder with a voice like him?
10Deck yourself now with majesty and loftiness, and clothe yourself with glory and splendor.
11Scatter abroad the overflowings of your anger; and look on every proud one, and abase him.
12Look on every proud one, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place.
13Hide them in the dust (aphar) together; bind their faces in the hidden place.
14And I myself will also praise you, that your own right hand can save you.
15Behold now Behemoth, which I made with you; he eats grass like the ox.
16Behold now, his strength is in his loins, and his force in the muscles of his belly.
17He stiffens his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together.
18His bones are tubes of bronze; his limbs are like bars of iron.
19He is the first of the ways of God; he that made him brings near his sword.
20For the mountains bring forth food for him, and all the living things (chai) of the field play there.
21Under the lotus trees he lies, in the covert of the reed and the marsh.
22The lotus trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook surround him.
23Behold, a river rages, he does not hasten; he is confident though a Jordan bursts forth to his mouth.
24Can one take him before his eyes, or pierce his nose with snares?
25Can you draw out Leviathan with a hook, or press down his tongue with a cord?
26Can you put a rope in his nose, or pierce his jaw with a thorn?
27Will he make many supplications to you? Or will he speak soft things to you?
28Will he make a covenant (berit) with you, that you should take him for a servant forever?
29Will you play with him like a bird? Or will you bind him for your maidens?
30Will partners bargain over him? Will they divide him among the Canaanites?
31Can you fill his skin with barbed darts, or his head with fish-spears?
32Lay your hand upon him; remember the battle, you will do it no more.
