1A Maskil of Asaph. Give ear, my people, to my Torah; incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter riddles from of old;
3which we have heard and known, and our fathers have recounted to us.
4We will not hide from their sons, to the latter generation recounting the praises of YHWH, and his might, and his wonders that he did.
5And he established a testimony (edut) in Jacob, and set a Torah in Israel, which he commanded (tzivvah) our fathers, to make them known to their sons;
6so that the latter generation might know, the sons who would be born, that they should arise and recount them to their sons;
7and that they should set their confidence in God, and not forget the deeds of God, but keep his commandments (mitzvot);
8and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not set its heart firm, and whose spirit (ruach) was not faithful with God.
9The sons of Ephraim, armed shooters of the bow, turned back in the day of battle.
10They did not keep the covenant (berit) of God, and in his Torah they refused to walk;
11and they forgot his doings, and his wonders that he had shown them.
12Before their fathers he did a wonder, in the land of Egypt, the field of Zoan.
13He split the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters stand like a heap.
14And he led them with a cloud by day, and all the night with a light of fire.
15He split rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as from the great deeps.
16And he brought forth streams out of the crag, and caused waters to run down like the rivers.
17And they continued still to sin against him, to rebel against the Most High (Elyon) in the dry land.
18And they tested God in their heart, by asking food for their soul (nephesh).
19And they spoke against God; they said, "Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
20Behold, he smote a rock, and waters gushed out, and streams overflowed; can he give bread also? or will he provide flesh for his people?"
21Therefore YHWH heard, and was wroth; and a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also went up against Israel;
22because they did not believe in God, and did not trust in his salvation (yeshuah).
23And he commanded (tzivvah) the skies above, and opened the doors of heaven;
24and he rained upon them manna to eat, and gave them the grain of heaven.
25Man (ish) ate the bread of the mighty; he sent them provision to the full.
26He made the east wind set forth in the heavens; and by his strength he drove on the south wind.
27And he rained upon them flesh like dust (aphar), and winged fowl like the sand of the seas;
28and he made it fall in the midst of his camp, round about his dwellings (mishkan).
29And they ate and were greatly satisfied; and he brought them their craving.
30They were not estranged from their craving; their food was yet in their mouth,
31and the anger of God went up against them, and slew among their stout ones, and struck down the young men of Israel.
32In all this they sinned still, and did not believe in his wonders.
33And he ended their days in vanity, and their years in terror.
34When he slew them, then they sought him; and they returned and sought God earnestly.
35And they remembered that God was their rock, and God Most High (El Elyon) their redeemer.
36And they enticed him with their mouth, and with their tongue they lied to him.
37And their heart was not firm with him, neither were they faithful in his covenant (berit).
38But he, being compassionate, atones for iniquity and does not destroy; and many a time he turned back his anger, and did not stir up all his wrath.
39And he remembered that they were flesh (basar), a spirit (ruach) that goes and does not return.
40How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness, and grieved him in the desert!
41And they returned and tested God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.
42They did not remember his hand, the day when he redeemed them from the foe;
43when he set his signs (ot) in Egypt, and his wonders (mofetim) in the field of Zoan;
44and he turned their rivers to blood, and their streams, that they could not drink.
45He sent among them swarms of flies, and they devoured them; and frogs, and they destroyed them.
46And he gave their produce to the caterpillar, and their labor to the locust.
47He killed their vines with hail, and their sycamores with frost.
48And he gave over their cattle to the hail, and their livestock to the bolts.
49He sent against them the burning of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, a sending of messengers of evil.
50He leveled a path for his anger; he did not spare their soul (nephesh) from death, but gave their life (chai) over to the pestilence;
51and he smote all the firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham;
52and he made his own people set out like sheep, and led them like a flock in the wilderness.
53And he led them in safety, and they did not fear; but their enemies the sea covered.
54And he brought them to his holy border, to this mountain which his right hand had acquired.
55And he drove out nations before them, and apportioned them by line as an inheritance, and made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.
56Yet they tested and rebelled against God the Most High (Elyon), and did not keep his testimonies (edot);
57and they turned back and dealt treacherously like their fathers; they twisted like a deceitful bow.
58And they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.
59God heard, and was wroth, and greatly rejected Israel;
60and he forsook the tabernacle (mishkan) of Shiloh, the tent he had pitched among men (adam);
61and he gave his strength to captivity, and his glory into the hand of the foe.
62And he gave his people over to the sword, and was wroth with his inheritance.
63Fire devoured his young men, and his virgins were not praised;
64his priests fell by the sword, and his widows did not weep.
65And my Lord (Adonai) awoke like one who sleeps, like a mighty man shouting from wine.
66And he smote his foes backward; an everlasting reproach he gave them.
67And he rejected the tent of Joseph, and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;
68but he chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.
69And he built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth which he founded forever.
70And he chose David his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds;
71from following the nursing ewes he brought him, to shepherd Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.
72And he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, and led them by the skillfulness of his hands.
