How to read this study

Each citation carries the source text together with a literal rendering. A transliteration is added only where the argument turns on the sound of a word. The parentheses inside the literal rendering are placed only on words that actually carry the argument in that chapter; where a form has to be analysed, the tense and voice are named in the body and the ground for it is set out in the word-breakdown table.

Part Three, "What Was Jacob Waiting For," treated the single verse Genesis 49:18. This fourth part treats the two verses on either side of it — Gen 48:16 and 49:10 — and the New Testament that takes them up. Old Testament counts are over all 23,213 verses of OSHB v2.2; New Testament counts are a full survey of RP2018. Verse numbers follow the common English versification, with the Masoretic numbers given alongside for Genesis 32 and Hosea 12.

1Jacob's last three verses

Genesis 48~49 is Jacob blessing his grandsons and his sons. Within it there are three places where he addresses not a man but God, and all three use a different word.

  • Absolute — the free-standing form, with no noun hung on behind it (→ Appendix C-8)
  • In this verse — It is absolute because no noun is bound behind it. The next word, הַגֹּאֵל, is not a possessor hanging on this noun but a participial phrase qualifying the same referent from behind. Had it been construct, it would read "the messenger of …" and the following word would be its possessor.

  • Qal — the basic active stem, with nothing added to the root (→ Appendix C-2)
  • Participle — it has no tense. It points to an action in progress or continuing, and can stand as a noun (→ Appendix C-3)
  • Absolute — the free-standing form, with no noun hung on behind it (→ Appendix C-8)
  • In this verse — It shares its consonants with the noun גֹּאֵל (redeemer), but here it takes the object אֹתִי (me) directly, so it is a participle used as a verb. With the article it becomes "the One who is redeeming me." The argument that this is an act in progress and not a title comes out of this form.

יְבָרֵךְ֮yevarekhVerb · Piel · Imperfect · 3rd Person Masculine Singularmay he bless
  • Piel — the intensive and transitive stem; the middle consonant is doubled (dagesh) (→ Appendix C-2)
  • Imperfect — the conjugation that views an action as not completed. Person is marked at the front of the word. It serves future, repeated and modal senses, and does not narrate what has passed (→ Appendix C-3)
  • 3rd person singular · masculine — the verb marks the person, gender and number of its own subject, so it is clear who acts even with no subject pronoun (→ Appendix C-4~C-6)
  • In this verse — The prefix יְ marks third person masculine singular. The middle consonant ר is a guttural and cannot be doubled, so the preceding vowel merely lengthened; the stem is Piel. Jacob named three subjects (Elohim twice, the malakh) and this one predicate answers them in the singular.

Bearing on the gospel — Because goel is a participle and not a noun, redemption is not a title He carries about with Him but something that actually happened to Jacob.

Goel (הַגֹּאֵל) is not a title but a participle. Not the noun "redeemer" as a standing, but "the One who is redeeming me" — an act in progress. The object is nailed down as well: "me." This is not a general statement but something that happened to Jacob himself.

Where this word begins

Word groupWhole OTFirst occurrenceTimes in Genesis
gaal (H1350) — to redeem, to buy back104× in 84 versesGen 48:161 (here only)

The second occurrence comes far later, at Exodus 6:6; it becomes law in Leviticus 25, and runs on through the kinsman-redeemer of Ruth, Job 19:25 ("my goel lives"), and Isaiah 41:14. The starting point of that line is Jacob's mouth.

He calls three and one predicate answers

In the verse just before, verse 15, Jacob calls on "the Elohim" twice. In verse 16 he calls "the malakh." The titles are three but the predicate that follows is one. Yevarekh (יְבָרֵךְ) is third person masculine singular imperfect.

  • Perfect — the conjugation that views an action as completed. Person, gender and number are marked at the end of the word (→ Appendix C-3)
  • 3rd person singular · feminine — the verb marks the person, gender and number of its own subject, so it is clear who acts even with no subject pronoun (→ Appendix C-4~C-6)
  • In this verse — It is feminine singular because the subject is יָדוֹ (his hand), and in Hebrew יָד is a feminine noun. The perfect third feminine singular ending is ־ָה. Being Hiphil, it means "to make the hand reach" — that is, that his means extend far enough to pay.

Bearing on the gospel — That the right to redeem is nailed down in two conditions means that not just anyone may die in another's place. He must be no stranger but flesh of the same flesh, and he must be able to pay. These two conditions are themselves the reason for the incarnation.

Bearing on the gospel — On the children's side the tense is perfect, on His side aorist. He entered at one point into a condition that is always ours; without this the substitution does not stand.

The two verbs differ in tense. On the children's side it is perfect (kekoinoneken): having shared in flesh and blood, that state holds still. On His side it is aorist (meteschen): His entering that state happened at one point. The statement is that He shared in an abiding condition by a single entry into it.

Heb 2:17 · RP2018

Ὅθεν ὤφειλεν κατὰ πάντα τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς ὁμοιωθῆναι, ἵνα ἐλεήμων γένηται καὶ πιστὸς ἀρχιερεὺς τὰ πρὸς τὸν θεόν, εἰς τὸ ἱλάσκεσθαι τὰς ἁμαρτίας τοῦ λαοῦ.

LiteralTherefore He was obligated to be made like His brothers in every respect, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

Opheilen (ὤφειλεν) is a verb of debt, and here it is imperfect. Not a choice but a requirement to be discharged, and one that kept standing. What the law required as sheer basar, flesh of the same flesh, Hebrews writes over as sarx kai haima, flesh and blood.

  • In this verse — It is absolute because the following בֵּית אֵל is not a possessor but a place name in apposition. The article lengthened to הָ because the following consonant א is a guttural and cannot be doubled.

Bearing on the gospel — The One introduced as a messenger uses the first-person anokhi and says, "I am the God." God does not withdraw behind a deputy when He meets a man.

The speaker in verse 11 is malakh ha-Elohim, the messenger of God. In verse 13 that messenger uses the first-person pronoun anokhi and says, "I am the God of Bethel." Jacob had heard this before he ever came to the Jabbok. The same usage recurs within Genesis — Hagar calls the one who spoke to her by the malakh of YHWH "YHWH" (Gen 16:13), and in Gen 22:11~16 the malakh of YHWH says, "you have not withheld your son from Me."

Bearing on the gospel — The statement is that the nephesh was delivered even after seeing face to face. A way stands open in which facing God does not end in death for a man, and that way is the goel this study takes up later.

The text calls the one he wrestled an ish (אִישׁ, a man) (Gen 32:24). That is, He stood in the form of a man. Yet Jacob named the place the face of God. And Hosea identifies that opponent.

Bearing on the gospel — The time the rule stays with Judah is bound by ad (until). The promise is not a vague hope but a statement with a boundary in time.

Shevet (sceptre) and mehoqeq (ruler's staff) are instruments of rule. The lion image in the preceding verse belongs to the same line (Gen 49:9). What comes out of this passage is kingship, not the standing of a kinsman.

Revelation sets the two lines one verse apart

In Rev 5:5 the elder says, "the Lion of the tribe of Judah has overcome." Yet when John looked, what stood there was a Lamb as though slaughtered (Rev 5:6). And the next verse writes what that Lamb did in the language of the goel.

  • Dative — to, by, with. Means and recipient (→ Appendix C-12)
  • In this verse — Being dative it marks means or price. It is the means in "You purchased with Your blood."

Bearing on the gospel — Agorazo is the verb for paying a price in a market, and the price is named in the dative as "Your blood." Redemption is not a declaration but a payment.

Agorazo (ἀγοράζω) is the verb for buying in a market at a price. This is what the Hebrew gaal looks like carried out in Greek, and the price was paid not as the Lion but as the Lamb.

  • Aorist — the tense that views an event as a single point. Augment + σα ending (→ Appendix C-13)
  • Passive — the subject is acted upon (→ Appendix C-13)
  • Subjunctive — condition, purpose, exhortation. It stands in ἐάν and ἵνα clauses and takes no augment (→ Appendix C-13)
  • 3rd person singular — the verb marks the person, gender and number of its own subject, so it is clear who acts even with no subject pronoun (→ Appendix C-4~C-6)
  • In this verse־θη־ is the passive marker, and because it is subjunctive the ending vowel lengthened to ῇ. It hangs on the ἐὰν μή clause, so it gives the condition "unless one is born." Being passive, one does not bring oneself to birth but is brought to it.

  • Accusative — the object (→ Appendix C-12)
  • In this verse — Being accusative it is the object of the preceding infinitive ἰδεῖν (to see). This word is what the statement "cannot even see" is about.

Bearing on the gospel — Gennethe is aorist passive subjunctive. There is nothing active on the part of the one born, so the new birth is not something achieved but something received.

What the text says is not "cannot enter" but "cannot even see." And gennethe is passive. In being born there is nothing active on the part of the one born. Forcing is a later question. What one is born of, Peter specifies.

  • In this verse — A present participle, genitive masculine singular. Its case, gender and number agree with λόγου, so the form itself names the Logos as what this participle qualifies.

Bearing on the gospel — A perfect passive participle: it happened once and holds to the present, and the one who brought it about is not the one born. And that seed is the word, and that word remains first.

Two decisive words stand together in this one verse. Spora (seed) — the word that takes up the seed of Genesis 3:15 directly. Menontos (remaining) — the same meno of item (4) below. The word remains first, and then we remain. The order is already fixed here. That anagegennemenoi is a perfect passive participle points the same way: something that happened once and holds still, and the one who brought it about is not the one born.

The weight is in the second half. Tetereka is perfect: He Himself has already kept the Father's commands and the result of that holds still; and the meno that follows is present. He carried out the manner of remaining first, and handed it over from within that state. That the verb on our side is future (meneite) follows the same order.

Keeping the commands and remaining in Him are bound into one sentence in only two places in the New Testament. The second of them states mutual dwelling outright — "the one who keeps His commands remains in Him, and He in him" (1Jo 3:24). And the text nails down that those commands are not heavy (1Jo 5:3 · Mat 11:30).

Καὶ ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο, καὶ ἐσκήνωσεν ἐν ἡμῖν, καὶ ἐθεασάμεθα τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ, δόξαν ὡς μονογενοῦς παρὰ πατρός, πλήρης χάριτος καὶ ἀληθείας.

LiteralAnd the logos(Word) became sarx(flesh) and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory — glory as of the only-begotten from the Father — full of charis(grace) and aletheia(truth).

To become the flesh-of-one-flesh that the law required, the Logos became flesh and pitched His tent. The malakh Jacob called goel in Gen 48:16 is the Logos of Joh 1:14.

Appendix A — material that tells against this argument

Presenting only what favours a case is not study, so the material on the other side is gathered here.

A malakh is usually a created messenger. The word occurs 213 times in the Old Testament and the overwhelming majority refer to created messengers or to human envoys. The men Jacob sent to Esau in Gen 32:3 are malakhim too. Nor is the singular predicate of Gen 48:16 decisive: in Hebrew, when several subjects are listed, the predicate commonly agrees with the nearest one. — Yet Genesis itself treats this malakh apart (Gen 16:13 · 22:11~16 · 31:13). Within Genesis this usage is not an exception but a consistent group.

The textual problem in Shiloh. The manuscript tradition divides at שִׁילוֹ in Gen 49:10. The Septuagint reads it as "the things laid up for him" (שֶׁלּוֹ), which makes it not a name. This study takes the Masoretic text as its source and does not hang its argument on this one word. The argument of chapter 5 rests on the fact that the shevet and the mehoqeq are with Judah, and that part is unaffected by the variant.

The voice of Mat 11:12. Biazetai reads either as middle ("presses forward with force") or as passive ("suffers violence"), and the RP2018 parsing tags it passive. A good many commentators read biastes as "violent men" as well. The argument about order in this study does not depend on how the voice of this verse is settled. The conclusion that forcing comes after the new birth comes from Joh 3:3.

A first occurrence is only a lexical fact. That the first occurrence of gaal is Gen 48:16 is a fact of canonical order; it is not evidence that Jacob knew the later goel provision. What this study speaks to is not the extent of Jacob's knowledge but where the text placed this word. The text placed it in Jacob's mouth.

Appendix C — Grammar reference

Teacher’s edition — not in the student edition

This appendix is attached so that the one teaching can read the word-breakdown tables unaided. It takes no part in the argument of the study; it is what the word notes in each chapter point to with → Appendix C-0. So that it can be followed by someone who has never studied Hebrew or Greek, every original-language form printed here carries its reading and its meaning alongside. Only forms that actually occur in this study are treated.

The specimen words in the paradigm tables are the ones grammars have long used: for Hebrew שָׁמַר (shamar, to keep) and ק־ט־ל (qatal, to kill); for Greek λύω (luo, to loose). The meaning is not the point — how the endings and prefixes change is the point — so find in the table the shape that matches your own word.

C-1 How a Hebrew word is built

A Hebrew word generally comes from a root of three consonants. The root holds only the frame of the meaning; an actual word is made when a vowel pattern is laid over it and pieces are attached front and back.

LayerWhat it doesExampleReadingMeaning
rootthe frame of the meaningג־א־לg-'-lto redeem (three consonants, nothing more)
vowel patternfixes the stem and the conjugationגָּאַלgaalhe redeemed (Qal perfect)
vowel patternsame root, different patternגֹּאֵלgoelone redeeming (Qal participle)
piece in frontarticle · conjunction · preposition · personהַגֹּאֵלha-goelthe one redeeming
piece behindperson · gender · number · pronominal suffixגְּאָלוֹgealohe redeemed him

It is enough to notice that the same three consonants divide into "he redeemed" and "one redeeming" by the vowels alone. So a notation in the word table such as Definite Article + Verb · Qal · Participle · Masculine Singular Absolute is the layers inside one word, written out in order. The source text marks those boundaries in the original with /, so the notation and the pieces of the original interlock one by one.

Hebrew vowels are points and strokes written under the consonant. In the table below ־ marks the place where a consonant stands. These names recur through the appendix, so it is worth one look.

־ֲ ־ֱ ־ֳhateph patach · segol · qamatsvery short a · e · o. They stand only under gutturals

The point written inside a consonant is called dagesh, and there are two of them.

DageshWhat it doesExample
weak dageshhardens the six consonants ב ג ד כ פ ת (v→b · f→p)בְּ be
strong dageshmakes the consonant read twice. It is the mark of Piel, Pual and Hithpaelקִטֵּל qittel (the ט is doubled)

The doubled "tt" of qittel is that strong dagesh. This one point divides Qal from Piel.

C-2 Verb stems (binyanim) — how one root changes its meaning

A Hebrew verb changes meaning when the stem changes, even with the same root. There are seven basic stems. Below are all third masculine singular perfect of the root ק־ט־ל (qatal, to kill).

StemMarkExampleReadingMeaning
Qalnothing attachedקָטַלqatalhe killed
Niphalprefix נִ niנִקְטַלniqtalhe was killed
Pielmiddle consonant doubledקִטֵּלqittelhe killed (intensively)
Pualdoubling + u (ֻ) vowelקֻטַּלquttalhe was killed
Hiphilprefix הִ hi · vowel iהִקְטִילhiqtilhe caused to kill
Hophalprefix הָ hoהָקְטַלhoqtalhe was made to be killed
Hithpaelprefix הִת hitהִתְקַטֵּלhitqattelhe killed himself

Qal and Piel both give "killed," but Piel leans toward intensity or toward taking an object. Hiphil becomes "to cause to," and the sense shifts one step.

Besides these there is the Poel · Polel series, used by verbs whose root consonants repeat or fall short of three. מְחֹקֵק (mehoqeq) in Gen 49:10 is such a case, and in the source coding the letter m stands for Poel.

Does "a-a" mean Qal perfect — how to read the vowel pattern

Seeing that both קָטַל (qatal) and גָּאַל (gaal) are "a-a," one might memorise an a sound means Qal perfect, and go wrong at once. What settles the stem is not a single sound but the whole pattern: ① what is attached in front, ② whether the middle consonant is doubled, ③ the vowels under the first and second consonants — the three together.

Stem① prefix② middle doubled③ vowel pattern3ms perfectReading
Qalnonenoa - aקָטַלqatal
Niphalנִ ninoni - aנִקְטַלniqtal
Pielnoneyesi - eקִטֵּלqittel
Pualnoneyesu - aקֻטַּלquttal
Hiphilהִ hinohi - iהִקְטִילhiqtil
Hophalהָ honoho - aהָקְטַלhoqtal
Hithpaelהִת hityeshit - eהִתְקַטֵּלhitqattel

Qal is not Qal because it is "a-a," but because nothing is attached in front and nothing is doubled in the middle. Pual (quttal) also has a patach (a) under the second consonant, and so does Hophal (hoqtal). Count sounds alone and these three tangle.

The vowel pattern of the Qal perfect is not one pattern. Verbs of action are "a-a," but verbs of state differ in the second vowel.

KindVowel patternExampleReadingMeaning
action verba - aקָטַלqatalhe killed
stative verba - eכָּבֵדkavedhe was heavy
stative verba - oקָטֹןqatonhe was small

All three are Qal perfect third masculine singular. So "a-a" is the commonest pattern in the Qal perfect, not the definition of Qal.

A guttural in the word shakes the pattern. The gutturals are א alef · ה he · ח het · ע ayin, and with them ר resh. These letters cannot do two things — they cannot be doubled, and they take a sheva badly.

What happensWhyExample
no point where doubling should standa guttural cannot take a strong dagesh; the vowel before it lengthens insteadיְבָרֵךְ yevarekh — Piel, yet the ר is not doubled
a short a · e · o stands where a sheva shouldthe guttural turns the sheva into a hateph vowelגָּאַל gaal — a patach under the second consonant, א

So for a word containing a guttural, do not judge by the vowels and points alone; follow the parsing column of the source text. Yevarekh in Gen 48:16 is such a case: by its surface it is easily mistaken for Qal.

Three ways to recognise a stem

  • A הִ in front with an i (ִי) in the stem is Hiphil — הִשִּׂיגָה hissiga (Lev 25:49, it made reach)
  • A point (dagesh) in the middle consonant, doubling it, is Piel — קִוִּיתִי qiwwiti (Gen 49:18, I have waited)
  • Nothing front or back, the root standing as it is, is Qal — גֹּאֵל goel (Gen 48:16, one redeeming)

The transliteration column of the word table gives the sound of the lemma. A Hebrew dictionary lists a verb in the Qal perfect third masculine singular. That is why the transliterations in the word tables always look "a-a" — gâ'al · bârak · nâśag · qâvâh. That sound is not the sound of the form as it actually stands in the text.

Form in the textReadingWord-table transliteration (lemma)Form of the lemma
הַגֹּאֵלha-goelgâ'alגָּאַל Qal perfect 3ms
יְבָרֵךְyevarekhbârakבָּרַךְ Qal perfect 3ms
הִשִּׂיגָהhissiganâśagנָשַׂג Qal perfect 3ms
קִוִּיתִיqiwwitiqâvâhקָוָה Qal perfect 3ms

It is normal for the left and the right to sound different. What sounds in the text is on the left; what one looks up in a dictionary is on the right.

One thing more. Verbs like bârak and qâvâh, which are hardly ever used in Qal at all, are still listed in the shape of a Qal perfect. The shape of the headword does not mean the word occurs in Qal; it is only the dictionary's convention. So the stem must never be guessed from the transliteration — look at the parsing column.

C-3 Perfect · imperfect · participle — how Hebrew handles time

The Hebrew verb does not divide by tense as English or Greek does. It divides by whether the thing is finished or not.

ConjugationWhat it showsWhere person attachesExampleReadingMeaning
perfecta finished thingbehindקִוִּיתִיqiwwitiI have waited
imperfectnot finished, or yet to bein frontיְבָרֵךְyevarekhmay he bless
participleshows no time. In progress, continuingnone (gender and number only)גֹּאֵלgoel(one) redeeming
infinitivea form without personnoneלִגְאֹלligolto redeem
imperativesecond person onlynoneגְּאַלgealredeem

Why the distinction matters. The perfect is usually rendered "did" and the imperfect "will do," but in Hebrew whether a thing is finished comes first and the time is settled by context. A participle says nothing of time at all, so it is read as an abiding character — "the One redeeming." The argument at Gen 48:16 hangs on this.

Perfect and imperfect are aspect, not tense. That is, they mark not when a thing happened but whether it is viewed as complete. The time is settled by context and by whether a waw stands in front.

Common mistakeWhat is actually so
perfect = pastviewed as complete. The time is settled by context
imperfect = futureviewed as incomplete. It is used of repeated action in the past as well

The four names that appear in the source tags stand together like this. The name printed in the word-breakdown table is one of these four.

Source tagShapeTime it points toTimes in the OT

Imperfectperson marked by the prefixnot past — future · repeated · modal14,382
Consecutive Imperfectוַ wa + point + imperfecta thing past14,978
Consecutive Perfectוְ we + perfectfuture · repeated5,666

The waw reverses the sense in the lower two rows. So it is enough to look at whether the tag says "Consecutive." If it does, the thing is past; if it does not, it is not past. The detail is in Appendix C-11.

Both cases stand within this study.

All three carry "imperfect" in the name, yet the time they point to divides.

The four things an imperfect without a waw does

Note the second row. Job 1:5 is a thing past, yet it uses the imperfect — because it was not once but repeated. So neither may an imperfect be rendered future without thought.

C-4 Qal paradigm

Set out on the verb שָׁמַר (shamar, to keep). It is enough to see with the eye that person is marked behind in the perfect and in front in the imperfect.

תִּ · תַּtaw תti · ta3rd feminine · 2nd person
אֶ · אַalef אe · a1st singular
נִ · נַnun נni · na1st plural

The yod is the smallest letter in Hebrew and easy to miss. If a small stroke stands at the front of a word, take it as a third masculine imperfect.

The ground for reading יְבָרֵךְ (yevarekh) in Gen 48:16 as third masculine singular is this prefix י (yod). Being Piel, the vowel reduces to a sheva and it sounds "ye."

The ground for reading הִשִּׂיגָה (hissiga) in Lev 25:49 as third feminine singular is the ending ־ָה (ah), and the ground for קִוִּיתִי (qiwwiti) in Gen 49:18 as first singular is the ending ־ְתִּי (ti).

C-5 Piel paradigm

Doubling of the middle consonant is the mark of this stem. Note as well that the imperfect prefix vowel reduces to a sheva and sounds "ye · te · a · ne."

The left column fixes the sense. Perfect 3ms qittel is "he killed"; imperfect 3ms yeqattel is "he will kill."

C-6 Hiphil paradigm

The prefix הִ (hi) and the stem vowel i (ִי) are its marks. In the imperfect the prefix ה drops and the vowel a (ַ) remains.

3 masc. sing.הִקְטִילhiqtilיַקְטִילyaqtil

3 com. plur.הִקְטִילוּhiqtiluיַקְטִילוּyaqtilu
1 com. plur.הִקְטַלְנוּhiqtalnuנַקְטִילnaqtil

Being Hiphil, the sense throughout leans to "cause to kill." Perfect 3ms hiqtil is "he caused to kill."

The Hiphil in this study — הִשִּׂיגָה (hissiga) in Lev 25:49. The first consonant נ of the root נ־שׂ־ג (nasag, to reach) is absorbed into the following consonant, which is why the שׂ carries a point. Being Hiphil it means not "to reach" but "to make reach" — that is, that the hand extends to the price.

C-7 The participle — the form used most in this study

A participle shows no time, so it serves as a noun and as a verb alike. With the article it becomes "the one who …" All below are participles of ק־ט־ל (qatal, to kill).

Stem · senseMasc. sing.ReadingFem. sing.ReadingMasc. plur.Reading
Qal active — killingקֹטֵלqotelקֹטֶלֶתqoteletקֹטְלִיםqotelim
Qal passive — killedקָטוּלqatulקְטוּלָהqetulahקְטוּלִיםqetulim
Piel — killingמְקַטֵּלmeqattelמְקַטֶּלֶתmeqatteletמְקַטְּלִיםmeqattelim
Hiphil — causing to killמַקְטִילmaqtilמַקְטִילָהmaqtilahמַקְטִילִיםmaqtilim

A Qal participle has nothing attached in front; the participle of any other stem takes the prefix מ (mem). The מְ before מְחֹקֵק (mehoqeq) in Gen 49:10 is the sign that it is not Qal, and the source text tags it Poel.

Whether a participle is to be taken as a noun or as a verb is decided by whether it takes an object. הַגֹּאֵל (ha-goel) in Gen 48:16 takes the object אֹתִי (oti, me) directly after it, so it is a participle used as a verb. Without an object it would have read as the title "the Redeemer."

C-8 Nouns — gender and number, absolute and construct

KindEndingReadingExampleReadingMeaning
masculine singular(none)מַלְאָךְmalakhmessenger
masculine plural־ִיםimמַלְאָכִיםmalakhimmessengers
feminine singular־ָהahתּוֹרָהtorahinstruction
feminine plural־וֹתotתּוֹרוֹתtorotinstructions
dual־ַיִםayimרַגְלַיִםraglayimtwo feet

Common names a form in which masculine and feminine are not divided. נֶפֶשׁ (nephesh, soul) is such a word. And some words, like פָּנִים (panim, face), occur only ever in the plural, so a plural does not always mean that the things are many.

Absolute and construct. Hebrew has no word for "of." Instead it changes the shape of the first noun and hangs it on the noun behind.

AbsoluteConstruct
sensestanding freeone unit with the word behind
stressit keeps its ownit hands it to the word behind
shapeits own shapevowels reduce and endings change (m.pl. ־ִים im → ־ֵי ei; f.sg. ־ָה ah → ־ַת at)
exampleדָּבָר davar — wordדְּבַר יְהוָה devar YHWH — the word of YHWH

That davar reduced to devar is the sign of the construct.

There are two conditions that put a noun in the construct: another noun hung on behind it, or a pronominal suffix attached. So בְּשָׂרוֹ (besaro, his flesh) is construct on account of one suffix.

Conversely, with nothing hung on behind, it is absolute. This is why הַמַּלְאָךְ (ha-malakh, the messenger) in Gen 48:16 is absolute. The הַגֹּאֵל (ha-goel) that follows is not a bound noun but a participial phrase qualifying the same referent, so it does not change the shape of the noun before it.

Proper nouns mark no gender, number or state. That is why the parsing of שִׁילוֹ (Shilo) or יְהוָה (YHWH) ends in a single term.

C-9 The pieces attached in front

Hebrew attaches what English says with a separate word as a single letter on the front. So what looks like one word is often two or three pieces.

PieceReadingMeaningHow it attaches
הַhathe (article)it puts a point (dagesh) in the following consonant. Before a guttural it cannot, so the vowel lengthens to הָ ha · הֶ he
וְveand · butit becomes וּ u before certain consonants
בְּbein · byit puts a point in the following consonant
כְּkelike
לְleto · forit also appears as לִ li, according to the following consonant
מִmifrom · out oforiginally מִן (min); it puts a point in the following consonant and contracts

In הָאֵל (ha-el, the God) at Gen 31:13 the article lengthened to הָ because the following consonant א (alef) is a guttural and cannot take a point. In מִשְּׁאֵר (mi-sheer, from the flesh of) at Lev 25:49 the point in the שׁ is where the נ of מִן was absorbed.

C-10 The piece attached behind — the pronominal suffix

SuffixReadingMeaningExampleReadingMeaning

־וֹohisבְּשָׂרוֹbesarohis flesh
־ָהּahher
־ֵנוּenuour
־ָםamtheirמִשְׁכְּבוֹתָםmishkevotamtheir beds

On a noun it marks possession; on a verb, the object. Either way, a noun with a suffix attached stands in the construct.

לִישׁוּעָתְךָ (li-shuat-kha) in Gen 49:18 is three pieces — the preposition לְ (le) + the noun יְשׁוּעָה (yeshuah, construct) + the suffix ךָ (kha). That one suffix is the ground on which what is waited for is nailed down as "Your yeshuah."

C-11 The waw consecutive

This is the form most often met in Hebrew narrative. When the conjunction ו (waw) is attached, the senses of perfect and imperfect exchange places. The source text tags the two as follows.

Source tagGrammar-book nameShapeActual senseExampleReadingMeaning
Consecutive Imperfectwaw consecutive imperfect · wayyiqtolוַ wa + point + imperfectpast — it carries narrativeוַיִּקְרָאwayyiqraand He called
Consecutive Perfectwaw consecutive perfect · weqatalוְ we + perfectfuture · repeated · consequentוְגָאַלְתִּיwegaaltiand I will redeem

There are two ways to tell them apart: what vowel stands under the waw, and whether person is marked in front or behind.

Consecutive imperfectConsecutive perfect
the wawוַ wa (patach) + point in the next consonantוְ we (sheva)
personin front (it is imperfect)behind (it is perfect)
where it is usedwhere narrative runs onwhere command or promise runs on

The consecutive imperfect did not come out of the imperfect. Semitic older than Hebrew had a separate verb form for the past, and what settled into a shape resembling the imperfect is this form. So the name "imperfect" is, historically, close to a misnomer. Only its surface is imperfect; its root is a past form. This is why the reading "it is imperfect, so it is not yet finished" does not hold.

The Hebrew name of Leviticus, וַיִּקְרָא (wayyiqra), is the first word of Lev 1:1 and is exactly this consecutive imperfect. It points to a single event of calling Moses at the tent of meeting, and the וַיְדַבֵּר (waydabber, and He spoke) right after it runs on in the same form. וַיִּקְרָא at Gen 32:30 is the same.

Had a continuing call been meant, Hebrew had other forms to use — the participle קֹרֵא (qore, one calling), or the imperfect without waw יִקְרָא (yiqra, he will call). The text did not use them.

An example of the consecutive perfect is Exo 6:6. וְהוֹצֵאתִי (wehotseti, and I will bring out) · וְהִצַּלְתִּי (wehitsalti, and I will deliver) · וְגָאַלְתִּי (wegaalti, and I will redeem) follow one on another. Every form is perfect and every sense is of what is to come. It is a chain of promise hanging on "ani YHWH" (I am YHWH), so read as bare perfects the promise turns into recollection. This verse is the second occurrence of gaal treated in chapter 2.

Note also that in the first singular and the second masculine singular the consecutive perfect shifts its stress to the last syllable. The accent mark standing over the final תִּי of וְגָאַלְתִּ֤י is the sign of it.

Not knowing this rule, one reads the tenses of the Genesis narrative inverted throughout. To compare the four conjugations at a glance, see Appendix C-3.

C-12 Greek case — the ending tells what the word does in the sentence

Greek divides subject from object not by word order but by the shape of the ending. That is why a case is always given in the word-breakdown table. Below is the declension of λόγος (logos, word).

CaseWhat it doesSingularReadingMeaningPluralReading
nominativesubjectλόγοςlogosthe word (subj.)λόγοιlogoi

Other patterns of ending exist. σάρξ (sarx, flesh), which occurs in this study, is one.

CaseOriginalReadingMeaning
nominativeσάρξsarxflesh (subj.)
genitiveσαρκόςsarkosof flesh · in flesh
dativeσαρκίsarkiby flesh
accusativeσάρκαsarkaflesh (obj.)

The genitive has two uses. One is "of"; the other is the object of a verb that takes its object in the genitive. σαρκὸς καὶ αἵματος (sarkos kai haimatos) in Heb 2:14 is the latter. Because κοινωνέω (koinoneo, to share in) governs a genitive, it is not "of flesh and blood" but "shared in flesh and blood."

The dative likewise has two. Recipient (to) and means (by). αἵματί (haimati) in Rev 5:9 is means, so it reads "purchased with Your blood."

C-13 The Greek verb — four things inside one word

The difference between perfect and aorist is the whole of the argument at Heb 2:14. On the children's side it is written perfect (an abiding state), on His side aorist (entry at one point).

The transliteration column of the Greek word table is likewise the lemma sound. A Greek dictionary lists a verb in the present active indicative first person singular. So the tables carry sounds ending in "-o" throughout — koinoneo · agorazo · gennao. The sound of the form used in the text differs from it.

Form in the textReadingWord-table transliteration (lemma)Lemma

As with Hebrew: the sound to read aloud is on the left, the sound to look up is on the right.

C-14 Three marks by which a tense is recognised

A Greek verb can be sorted by tense almost entirely from its prefix and its ending.

MarkReadingWhere it standsWhat it announcesExampleReading
augment ein frontpast (imperfect · aorist)μετέσχενmeteschen
σsigmaafter the stemfuture · first aoristἠγόρασαςegorasas
reduplicationin frontperfectτετήρηκαtetereka
θηthebefore the endingaorist passiveγεννηθῇgennethe

The augment attaches only in the indicative. It does not attach in the subjunctive, the infinitive or the participle. So τηρήσητε (teresete) in Joh 15:10, though aorist, does not carry a past sense but a conditional one. Not knowing this rule, one misses that "if you had kept" is "if you keep."

When the augment meets a vowel it lengthens. + εη, ἐ + εη, ὀ + εω. It is by this rule that ἠγόρασας (egorasas) in Rev 5:9 is confirmed to come from ἀγοράζω (agorazo).

The second aorist changes the stem, not the ending. The aorist stem of ἔχω (echo, to have) is σχ (sch). μετέσχεν (meteschen) in Heb 2:14 is μετ + + σχ + εν.

C-15 λύω paradigm

The passive side renders "if I am loosed." γεννηθῇ (gennethe) in Joh 3:3 has the shape of the third row on the right. Being aorist passive subjunctive third singular, it reads "unless he is born." τηρήσητε (teresete) in Joh 15:10 has the shape of the fifth row on the left: "if you keep."

C-16 The Greek participle — five things in one word

A participle carries case, gender and number along with tense and voice. So reading a participle tells you what it qualifies from its form alone.

ParticipleMasc. nom. sing.ReadingMeaning
present activeλύωνluonloosing
aorist activeλύσαςlusashaving loosed
aorist passiveλυθείςlutheishaving been loosed
perfect activeλελυκώςlelukosstanding having loosed
perfect passiveλελυμένοςlelumenosstanding loosed

ἀναγεγεννημένοι (anagegennemenoi) in 1Pe 1:23 is a perfect passive participle, nominative masculine plural. It belongs to the series of the last row, and being plural its ending is ־οι (oi). It means that the being born again is finished and that standing is held now; being nominative plural, it points to those who receive the letter.

μένοντος (menontos) in the same verse is a present active participle, genitive masculine singular. Being genitive, it qualifies the λόγου (logou, of the word) right before it. Find the word whose case agrees, and what the participle hangs on is settled.

C-17 The Greek article

The article marks case, gender and number together, so the article alone tells the case of the noun behind it. The sense throughout is "the."
