What Is "the Curse of the Law"?

"The curse of the law" does not mean the law is a curse. It is the curse the law pronounces on the one who does not remain in it. Messiah redeemed us from that curse — not from the law. Eight cards: how the two readings of Galatians 3:10 diverge, and why seeking righteousness in the law, justification, and keeping the commandments are three different things.

Galatians 3:10 — two readings

If "those who are of the works of the law" in the first half means the people who keep the Torah, the verse contradicts itself in its second half. Read as it stands, both halves point to the same people.

The three are different things

Seeking righteousness in the law · justification · a justified person keeping the commandments. Kept apart, the reading "keeping the commandments means seeking righteousness by the law" has nowhere to stand.

Galatians 3:13

Messiah(Christ) redeemed us from the curse of the nomos(law), having become a curse for us — for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree" —

Galatians 3:10

For as many as are of the works of the nomos(law) are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not remain in all the things written in the biblion(book) of the nomos(law), to do them."

Deuteronomy 27:26

Cursed is he who does not uphold the words of this Torah, to do them. And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'

Galatians 6:13

For those who are circumcised do not even keep the nomos(law) themselves, but they desire to have you circumcised so that they may boast in your sarx(flesh).
